Downtown Calgary Osteopathic Manual Therapy
New Patient FormOsteopathic Manual Therapy, also known as manual Osteopathy, is a drug-free, non-invasive form of manual medicine. Our Osteopathic Therapist Stéphane Jacquet is trained in Osteopathic Manual Therapy and has received extensive training in human anatomy to identifying musculoskeletal disorders. He possess a great understanding of the causes of ailments and how to treat them. A referral from your physician is not required to see our Manual Therapy provider. If necessary, a referral to your physician may be required for further investigation, depending on your situation and health history.
The purpose of Osteopathic Manual Therapy is to focus on the body as a whole, treating and strengthening the musculoskeletal framework including the joints, muscles and spine. When doing so, Osteopathic Manual Therapy will positively affect the body’s nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems.
Osteopathic Manual Therapy involves the gentle, manual manipulation of the muscles and joints to restore the body’s structural balance. Osteopaths may use techniques such as palpation, physical manipulation, and stretching, combine at times with massage therapy to promote your body’s own natural healing abilities.
Osteopathic Manual Therapy is used to treat:
- Headaches, Migraines, and Tension Headaches
- Discomfort during Pregnancy
- TMJ Orofacial Pain
- Back and Neck Pain
- Sports-Related Injuries
- Muscle Aches and Pains
- Irritable Bowl Syndrome (IBS), Heartburn, and Indigestion
- Fibromyalgia and Chronic Pain
- Stress, Depression, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
- Tinnitus (Ringing of the Ears)
Some of the other techniques used by Osteopathic Therapists, in conjunction with Osteopathic Manual Therapy include:
Myofascial is dense tissue that surrounds your muscles and bones. Healthy Myofascia is soft and has the ability to stretch and move without restriction. When your body experiences physical trauma and/or inflammation this tissue becomes restricted and ultimately the source of tension throughout the rest of the body due to the development of scar tissue.
Functional Myofascial Release Therapy is a non-invasive, soft-tissue therapy used to locate and breakdown this scar tissue in problematic areas throughout your body to reduce muscle stiffness, muscle weakness, pain, and numbness. Using their hands and specially designed instruments, our wellness providers break down these adhesions to restore proper function. Functional Myofascial Release treatment is highly recommended for repetitive-strain injuries and is often used to improve athletic performance.
Osteopathic Manual Therapy and Functional Myofascial Release work harmoniously to help people with:
- Lower Back Pain
- Neck Stiffness
- Shoulder Pain
- Sports Related Injuries
- Muscle Spasms
- Decreased Joint Function
- Muscle and Fascial Tension
- Chronic Pain
Functional Myofascial Release is used in conjunction with our other wellness treatments to improve the body’s natural method of healing. Our focus is alleviating pain and rehabilitating your body from the roadblocks that prevent you from performing to your potential. The Evolve Chiropractic & Wellness team will always strive to identify and treat the cause of your conditions and illness, rather than just masking the symptoms.
Craniosacral Massage Therapy
Craniosacral Massage Therapy is a non-invasive, holistic modality that focuses on healing the body by treating the rhythmic pulse that naturally travels through your entire system. Your craniosacral system is composed of the soft tissue and bones of your head (cranium), your spine and your pelvis. Craniosacral Massage Therapy also targets the membranes and cerebrospinal fluids that cushion your brain and spinal cord.
During your Craniosacral Massage Therapy session, your practitioner will gently manipulate selected points throughout your skull, spine, pelvis and soft tissues with gentle finger pressure, and will take note of areas where there may be restrictions. From there, your practitioner will work to clear restrictions to allow the cerebrospinal fluid to flow freely.
A Typical Craniosacral Massage Therapy session will typically last 20 minutes to an hour, depending on your condition. You will lay on our comfortable treatment bed and remain fully clothed during your treatment.
Craniosacral Massage Therapy and Osteopathic Manual Therapy work together to treat ailments such as:
- Migraine Headaches
- Chronic Pain
- Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Post-Surgical Recovery
- TMJ Therapy
Visceral manipulation is used to treat the organs of the body including the heart, liver, spleen, stomach, bladder and intestines. Visceral manipulation will help to ensure that each organ has the adequate space and mobility to perform its functions properly. Using a refined sense of palpitation to make sure the organs are not impeding the major vessels or nerves in the area, your therapist uses a variety of safe techniques to achieve this goal. Osteopathic Manual Practitioners manually move the organs and the fascia that surrounds them to restore full movement. The process gentle — most patients only feel slight pressure — yet this practice is strong enough to drastically improve the performance of the organ.
Developed in France in 1932 by Emil and Estrid Vodder Lymphatic Drainage Massage has grown to be a modern manual technique used to assist lymphatic flow. The technique used to perform Lymphatic Massage Therapy is very gentle — the procedure will physically stimulate the lymphatic system to move excessive fluids from the body’s lymphatic system. The movement of this excess lymphatic fluid detoxifies unhealthy the surrounding connective tissues.
Your lymphatic system is composed vessels and lymph nodes throughout your entire body. Lymph fluid contains cells that remove harmful bacteria, viruses, and other undesirable substances. Lymph fluid is usually encouraged to flow by the body’s natural motion of muscles, organs and other body parts. When the lymphatic nodes or vessels become damaged due to surgery, injury or for any other reason, Lymphatic Massage Therapy gently stimulates the lymphatic fluid flow faster.
Lymphatic Drainage Massage is safe for almost everyone, but before beginning any treatment, we perform a detailed consultation to find out if you are considered a candidate for Lymphatic Drainage Massage.
Osteopathy for Infants and Children
Infants and children both benefit from Osteopathic Manual Therapy. The birthing process, sleep positions, and many other factors may alter a child’s natural alignment. Like adults, this may cause crowding in the nerves and other symptoms such as digestive disorders, excessive crying and trouble when feeding. Babies naturally respond very well to Osteopathic Manual Therapy. Children and infants require fewer and shorter appointments, which makes the experience more enjoyable.
The entire team at Evolve Chiropractic & Wellness are looking forward to providing you with the highest caliber of care in Calgary’s Downtown Core.
