At Evolve Chiropractic & Wellness, we know that women and girls in Canadian sports tend to be underrepresented. Because of this, females often time don’t seek the individualized personal advice and care that they need to make them successful in their chosen sport or activities. As a female growing up playing competitive sports full of driven, determined, strong and powerful women, I know the value that athletics can have in the physical development of the female body. Playing University basketball for 5 years, I know the physical and mental discipline required to get to that level. As an adolescent aspiring to reach those goals, the proper growth and development of my body physically were critical.
Injury prevention and management aided by physiotherapists, athletic trainers, dieticians, coaches and other athletes helped me push my body farther physically, so it didn’t become a barrier for my success. As I got older and obtained sports injuries, rehabilitation with physiotherapists, massage therapists and chiropractors allowed me to continue to play competitively. Now, as a retired competitive athlete from basketball, I have looked back and reflected on my experiences. Having a positive relationship with your body is important at any age and any gender, one that I will continue to promote in my professional life. Women and girls in sports is a passion of mine that bleeds into my physiotherapy profession and allows me to give a personalized approach to patient care. My patient approach is to optimize female performance in sport using the knowledge and skills that I have obtained from both personal experience and throughout my physiotherapy profession.
